Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision tonight to BIG EAST Conference foe at McDonough Arena. Tonight's match was the league opener for both squads as the Hoyas drop to 4-11 on the season with a 0-1 mark in conference action and Cincinnati improves to 9-4, with a 1-0 slate in league play. Game scores were 16-30, 34-36, 24-30. For the fifth-consecutive game sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) led the team in kills as she tallied nine for the night. Classmates Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) and Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) followed up with eight and seven kills, respectively. Junior captain Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) led the team with 25 kills while the digging effort was spread evenly among the team with seven different Hoyas credited with at least two digs. Sophomore Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) led the team with five total blocks (one solo, four assisted) while freshman Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) followed up with four assisted digs. The team hit .144 for the match and outblocked the Bearcats with 10.0 total team blocks to Cincinnati's 8.0. After a lackluster first game where the Hoyas managed to hit .040 to UC's .409, the Blue and Gray looked to rebound in game two. Game two saw a GU squad that put up 16 kills and hit .238 for the game. The play was centered on a quartet of sophomores with Robinson and Hardy tallying four kills apiece. Cohen chipped in three kills while McKoy added two kills of her own. The quartet combined for 13 kills on 34 attempts for a .265 hitting percentage. The score was tied 23 times in game two and the neither team ever took more than a three-point lead at any given time. Four timeouts were called in a 14-point span leading to the dramatic finish. Georgetown picked up their first game-point opportunity on a Robinson kill for the 29-28 edge. However, back-to-back Bearcats kills saved the game and gave Cincinnati a game point, prompting a Georgetown the final Georgetown timeout. A crucial kill from Hardy pitted the game at 30 and an error from UC gave the Hoyas their second game point. Georgetown's attempt was stifled again on a Cincinnati assisted block to tie the game at 31 points apiece. The Bearcats gave the Hoyas an additional opportunity to take game two on an ill-timed service error. Cincinnati held the Hoyas off yet again with solid blocking efforts but gave Georgetown another freebie on their second sixth service error of the game. UC's Jessie Nevitt played well under pressure as she held off another Hoya game point. Cohen created a fifth opportunity for Georgetown, but three-consecutive kills from the Bearcats sealed game two. In game three, Georgetown trailed by as many as eight points (18-10) before a Georgetown timeout. However, the Hoyas took 10 of the next 13 points to climb back within one point of the Bearcats (21-20). The 13-point span included five Georgetown kills and two assisted blocks from Georgetown. The Hoyas stayed within one (23-22), but struggled to tie the score as the Cincinnati offense continued to play well during tension-filled points. The Bearcats pulled away in game three winning four of the last six points to take game three and the match. The Hoyas hit .100 in game three with 11 kills. The Hoyas continue with BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, September 23 when they welcome Louisville to McDonough Arena for a 2 p.m. match. Louisville is 6-4 overall with a 1-0 slate in league action after defeating South Florida, 3-0 tonight.
