Georgetown Volleyball Edged by Seton Hall, 3-1, in BIG EAST Conference Opener

Sept. 22, 2006

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown volleyball team was dealt a 3-1 (30-23, 30-25, 26-30, 30-22) loss by conference foe Seton Hall tonight at McDonough Arena. The loss is the fourth in a row for the Hoyas as they drop to 5-8 on the season, 0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Pirates improve to 9-5 overall, 1-0 in the league.

Down 19-9 in the fourth game, Georgetown started a comeback when they won five-straight points, cutting the SHU lead by half behind the serving of freshman Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove). However, a Pirate timeout would end the run, as Seton Hall took game four, 30-22, and the match, 3-1.

In the third game, the Hoyas jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on the serve of freshman middle blocker Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd). At 13-10, the Hoyas went on a four-point run, again on the serve of McKoy, who served up one ace while senior middle blocker Annie Connor (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) recorded two blocks during the spurt that put the Hoyas up, 17-10. Junior setter Kate Fisher (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo) helped create three kill opportunities for the Hoyas that saw the GU lead extend an additional four points for a 25-15 lead. The Hoyas went on to win game three, 30-26.

After falling behind early in game two, Georgetown came back to within two points, 16-14, on a back-to-back block and kill from freshman Dana Dumas (Nokomis, Fla./Pine View). The Pirates would extend the lead 20-14, a lead they would hold until the end, taking the game, 30-25.

In game one, after trailing 15-9, the Hoyas outscored the Pirates, 7-2, cutting the lead to one. Four of the seven points were credited to Robinson on kills, while one was attributed to a kill from Dumas. Seton Hall scored the next three points for the 21-16 lead and slowly pulled away, winning the game, 30-23.

McKoy would finish the day with five block assists, three service aces and hitting .500. Connor hit .314, led the team with 15 kills and three solo blocks, and recorded four block assists. Freshman Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley) matched McKoy's game-high five block assists.

The Hoyas had 14 total team blocks to Seton Hall's 10.

"We played a well-coached team tonight and saw great performances from our middles, especially Annie Connor and Kiersten McKoy," Head Coach Arlisa Hagan said. "We've been working on our blocking this week and in this game it showed."

Georgetown returns to action on Friday, September 29 when they host Marquette at McDonough Arena. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
