Final Stats

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) led the way with 13 kills and freshman Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) had 33 assists, as the Georgetown University volleyball team (12-9, 5-3 BIG EAST) defeated Rutgers University (1-16, 0-7 BIG EAST) in three sets, 25-21, 25-12, 25-18 on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena.

The victory was the Hoyas fifth BIG EAST Conference win of the season, the most since they won seven in 2002.

In the first set the Hoyas took an early 4-2 lead, before the Scarlet Knights surged in front, using a 7-2 run to open a three-point, 9-6 lead. Rutgers would lead by as many as five before the Hoyas took over. GU regained the lead at 15-14 and never trailed again, as Manley had five first set kills to lead the blue and gray.

The Hoyas continued their momentum through the second set, as sophomore Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and Manley had back-to-back kills to open the set. Malone served the Hoyas to a 4-1 lead and they never looked back, leading by as many as 13 in a 25-12 second set victory. Junior Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) had four kills in six chances and Manley had six kills in eight chances to lead the Hoyas offense.

Rutgers' Caitlin Saxton had three early kills in the third set to help the Scarlet Knights bounce back. Several attack errors put the Hoyas in a 13-9 hole before Georgetown head coach Arlisa Williams called a timeout. Rutgers continued to pull away extending the lead to six, 17-11 before junior Jessica Hardy's (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) started a Hoyas run. Freshman Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) served the blue and gray to seven consecutive points to take a 19-17 lead. From there it was all Georgetown as senior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) served the Hoyas to five consecutive points to win the set, 25-18 and clinch the match.

Georgetown will travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Cardinals (10-10, 6-3 BIG EAST) on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. Louisville comes into the match having defeated Marquette and Syracuse in consecutive matches.
