Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision tonight at BIG EAST Conference opponent St. John's. The Hoyas drop to 7-15, and 1-8 in league action. St. John's improves to 24-1, 9-0 BE. Game scores were 19-30, 25-30, 25-30.
Game one saw a rough start from GU as they were trailing by as much as 12 points (22-10). Three-straight points behind the serve of freshman Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and a kill from freshman Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) would pull the Hoyas within eight (22-14). St. John's would string together four consecutive points for the 30-19 victory.
Georgetown stayed more consistent in the second game but still gave up a 19-13 lead to the Red Storm. Kills from seniors Annie Connor (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and Jessica George (Kennet Square, Pa./Kennet) along with SJU errors would pull the Hoyas within five (22-17). Three consecutive kills from freshman Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove), Connor and sophomore Jessica Buffum (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) would give the Hoyas hope as they cut the deficit to four. However, strong play from the Red Storm put the game away, 30-25, and gave SJU the 2-0 edge.
In game three, Georgetown played much cleaner and stayed even with St. John's. With the score tied at 18, the Red Storm pulled with a two-point lead. Two Connor kills sandwiched an SJU kill to keep the Hoyas in the game, 21-20. St. John's would continue to string together to win the game and the match.
George led the team with a .571 attack percentage, notching nine kills in 14 attempts. Connor led the team with 11 kills with two digs and one block assist. Freshman Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) came into the game in the middle of game two to record four kills in seven attempts for a .571 attack percentage. Sophomore Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) recorded a double-double with 31 assists and ten digs.
"This team showed a lot of heart there," Georgetown University Head Coach Arlisa Hagan said. "St. John's is a very athletic team and they are well-coached. They were a little faster than the Hoyas tonight but we hung in there and fought hard. I'm very proud of this group right now. We are just looking to build upon our performance tonight."
The Hoyas return to the court on Sunday, October 29 when they travel to Storrs, Conn. for a BIG EAST matchup with Connecticut. The game is slated for 2 p.m.
